I Am Grateful For…

Misc
I'm almost done reading the book Connected (will be by the time this is published). It's fascinating although, at least so far, little in the way of suggestions for how to take advantage of this information. That however doesn't change my plans around working on positive thoughts and emotions as a way to hack your own mind and increase productivity. I'm also trying to figure out how to reinforce my network. In short, these are completely self-serving posts. I am grateful for Thomas LaRock (b|t). Tom is hard to miss. If you look at the floor all the time, the green shoes might be a giveaway. If you look up a lot, keep looking up because he's quite tall. Oh yeah, and he's the President of PASS (for a couple of…

Execution Plans, Performance Tuning and Rum

Misc
[caption id="attachment_2827" align="alignleft" width="150"] This is me on the last cruise[/caption] In just a few more weeks I'll be setting sail on the first of two SQL Cruise events this year. I'm honored beyond my ability to appropriately express it to be included as one of the Technical Leads for both the cruise in February (7-14, 2015, I think there's a seat or two left) to the Caribbean and the one in June (14-21, 2015, definitely a couple of seats left) to the Mediterranean. Lest you think that this is just an excuse to hang out and drink, you ought to know a little about how sessions are presented on the cruise and the sessions I'm presenting. Don't mistake sessions on the boat for your typical one hour session at…

Say Thank You

Misc, Professional Development
I was approached by a man at SQL Bits who only wanted to thank me for blogging. He said, "I know you probably never hear from anyone, but you should. Thanks for what you do." I'm not mentioning his name because he promised me he'd write an editorial for publication, so I'm going to wait on him to get that done so he gets full credit then, not on my silly blog post. But, the idea stuck with me. I realized, that I don't do it. Oh yeah, I have an "Interesting Reading" set of links that I post to Twitter, Facebook and Linkedin. Sharing is "thanking" in our modern vernacular, right? No, of course not. It's not the same. I really do appreciate the help that I get on…

Carolina Cruise

Misc
I'm going to speak at three user groups in three days in North and South Carolina. Evidently this is known as the Carolina Cruise.  Here are all the details. And yeah, that's me and a bunch of Scouts down in the Florida Keys at Seabase. I'm really looking forward to this event. If you're in the area, let's get together and talk.

Curation and Performance

Misc, SQL Server
I'm trying out a new web site from Microsoft called Curah! that is all about curation. Curation is basically what blogging started out as. Blogs, short for Web Log, was really just a collection of links you'd visited recently and what you thought about them. But it's grown into all manner of things, the least of which is a collection of links and what I thought about them. However, the concept of a useful set of links, why they might be useful, what you'll find there, these concepts still have value. Hence the rise of curation. As a concept, I get it. I don't think it deviates radically from what we do with our blogs, our resources pages (see the links above), and other similar functions. But, it is rather…

Thanks For Stopping By

Misc
Yesterday I passed 300,000 views on the blog. Recently I went over 1,000 comments. My little joke on Tuesday garnered over 2,000 views alone. I just wanted to say thank you for stopping by and reading about my struggles to understand SQL Server, Azure, our amazing community and whatever else it is that I've posted here. I appreciate your time. On to the next 300,000.

An Experiment Concludes

Misc, Professional Development
[caption id="attachment_2548" align="alignleft" width="300"] That was hard work[/caption] You may or may not have noticed, but every single week day for the month of September, I've put up a blog post. Some were short little blurbs linking to some other person's blog or an article that I decided to comment on. Some were the normal, longer, type of posts that I put up, explaining some bit of technical behavior that has interested me or that I've had questions about. This is the last week day of the month and I'm excited to be able to go back to blogging 1-2 times a week again. There was no small amount of stress ensuring that I had posts scheduled out for each day, coming up with ideas, getting them written up. Whew!…

Great Idea: Tribal SQL

Misc
Writing books, even just a chapter, is not easy. Yet, people are desperate to do it for some reason. But, it's actually hard to break into writing (not that hard, I did it after all). So, when you get the chance to work on a book, if you're crazy enough to think you want to, jump on the opportunity. My good friend, and co-author of SQL Server MVP Deep Dives Volume 2, Jenn McCown (b|t) had an idea. Instead of gathering up a bunch of the usual suspects, what if you gave people who have never published anything a shot at writing a chapter. Yeah, insane, right? But then again, every author you know, at one point, wasn't published. Someone gave them a chance. Jenn is just that kind of…

My Next Phone May Be a Nokia

Misc
I really like my Windows Phone. Yes, there are not as many apps as on a Droid or iPhone. But the apps there are and the OS itself... wow! And the hardware is always charging forward. And evidently, this new acquisition from Microsoft suggests that it might charge forward in a more coordinated fashion. We'll see.

One for My SQL Sisters

Misc
Women, for the entire male half of the population, I apologize. Those who know me well recognize, pretty easily, that I am hardly "politically correct." My mode of address can be blunt and even rude. But... I think it's also recognized that I'm very even-handed with my blunt statements. Female or male, if you have in some way crossed me, I'm generally pretty clear about letting you know. So while I absolutely have prejudices (and I won't get into what I think mine are), they are not around Male/Female abilities. Yes, there are differences between the sexes coming from a million+ years of biology and Darwinism, but by & large, especially when talking about cognitive abilities, we're evenly matched. In the computing world, I'm an "old guy." With three or…
