All Day Seminar on DevOps in Oslo

DevOps
In just a couple of weeks, I'll be presenting an all day session on DevOps for databases. It takes place on Friday, August 30th. You can click here now to get signed up. I have a very hard time hiding just how excited I get about DevOps. It's not just that the technology is fun. It is. It's not just that it makes for a happier work environment. It does. It's not because by using DevOps you can deliver more quality functionality, faster, for your organization. You can. No, the reason I love DevOps, as a DBA, is because it creates added protections for my production environment and my production data. You can think of the entire DevOps process as another backup, another consistency check, one more enforced referential constraint.…

Why PASS?

PASS
In case this is your first time hearing of it, PASS is the single largest community of Microsoft Data Platform professionals on the planet. It consists of local groups, virtual groups, multiple online events, SQLSaturday, and, to pay for it all, PASS Summit. However, that's not true. It consists of a whole bunch of our peers, people, data pros and developers, trying to do better and be better. PASS I'm currently serving, as an unpaid volunteer, on the Board of Directors of the PASS organization. Actually, truth be told, I'm sitting as president of the board. That means that I'm responsible for the whole shooting match. Our goals are really simple. We want to create as many possible ways for you, me, and all our peers to connect, share and…

Precons in Richmond, Philadelphia and New York

Professional Development
I love when I get the opportunity to present at SQLSaturday events. Even more than that, I love when I get the opportunity to do a precon at a SQLSaturday event. Well, I've got three coming up. All three are an all day session entitled "SQL Server Tools for Query Tuning." Seating at all the events is limited, so please register early. First, in Richmond, on March 23, 2018, you can register here. Then, I'll be in Philadelphia on April 20, 2018. You can sign up here for that event. I will be in New York, NY, my old stomping grounds, May 18, 2018. Go here to register for that event. I hope to see you at one of these events where I'll do my best to share as much…

Payment and the Board

PASS
If you read the March PASS Board meeting minutes, you saw that there was a discussion around board members and payments related to SQLSaturday precons. The question is simple, for a PASS branded event, should a member of the PASS board receive payment? There are a couple of relevant facts. In the by-laws it says: “…provided that nothing herein contained shall be construed to preclude any Director from serving PASS in an educational or speaking capacity and receiving compensation upon approval by a majority vote from the Board of Directors.” That's very clear. If a member of the Board wishes to receive payment from PASS to put on a precon, they have to get approval of the Board. Next fact, PASS branded events, such as SQLSaturday, are not, because of…
