They gave me horrific nightmares…..but when I did…. I loved Stephen King. Tommyknockers would be a great Halloween read. Dean Koontz is also a great read. He added an extra scary option since he writes about Orange County (where I live) and I frequented the places his characters would go to. I think Midgnight was the one I loved.

You can also go old school and read Edgar Allen Poe.
